Conservation projects in Maine to receive $922K support
The state of Maine will receive $922,876 from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund to support conservation and recreation projects across the state.
“LWCF is our country’s most important and successful conservation and outdoor recreation program,” U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King said in a release about the funding. “This landmark conservation program has created outdoor recreation opportunities in every state and 98% of counties across the country. Its funding has been used to build parks and playing fields, recreation trails, and to preserve open spaces.”
The funds, which come in part from the lease revenue from offshore oil and gas developments, have been utilized in “virtually every county across the country” according to King and Collins, and helps to fund projects identified by states that contribute to local economies, create jobs and expand outdoor recreational opportunities.
According to the office of Sen. Collins, a recent analysis of the Land and Water Conservation Fund found that every $1 invested in land acquisition generated a $4 return on investment for communities.
