Early morning fire destroys downtown Freeport restaurant
Early Wednesday morning, firefighters from the communities of Freeport, Brunswick, Topsham, Pownal and Yarmouth battled a blaze that destroyed the 30-year-old downtown Freeport eatery, the Corsican Cafe & Chowder House.
Town firefighters were first alerted to the fire at 3:02 a.m.
"Because [of the building’s] balloon construction, there were a lot of open voids and the fire just raced right up," Freeport Fire Chief Darrel Fournier said in a release by the Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce.
By 5:15 a.m. firefighters had nearly extinguished the fire, which Fournier told the Portland Press Herald resulted in an estimated loss of $400,000.
According to the Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce, the two-and-a-half-story building was built in 1870 and recently reopened for the season following renovations.
No injuries were reported and the Fournier said the building is insured, adding that the state fire marshal will investigate to determine the cause of the fire.
