Rockland represents Maine in national Main Streets celebration
The city of Rockland is representing the state of Maine in National Life Group’s 2016 Main Streets Across America celebration.
The Montpelier, Vt.-based financial service company selected Main Streets in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia that play a central role in the communities in which they are located and that have unique stories to tell.
“Main Street is more than just an address, it’s a mindset that embraces a strong sense of community based on shared neighborly values,” Mehran Assadi, president and CEO of National Life Group, said in a statement about Rockland’s recognition. “It’s a place where handshakes, smiles and personal greetings still mean something and where promises are made and kept.”
According to National Life Group, the Main Streets selected in each of the 50 states reflect strong “Main Streets” values, including, but not limited to, a strong local business presence; community gathering spots and scenic vistas; celebrations of history and traditions and reflections of civic pride; and diverse social and cultural events and activities.
“Since its incorporation as a National Main Streets program, Rockland has embraced the national model of a four-point approach to success: organization; design; economic vitality; and promotions,” said Gordon Page Sr., executive director of Rockland Main Street Inc., in a statement. “Rockland and its Main Street is a vibrant, thriving hub of commercial and civic activity, fueled by local entrepreneurs and established businesses and cherished by residents and visitors alike."
Downtown Rockland has been a hotbed of development in recent years. This spring and summer alone will see the opening of approximately seven new businesses — including the opening of the city’s tallest building, the 250 Main Hotel, which opened on Monday.
