Ex-Pirates owner deflects loss, plans new team for 2017
Well, that didn’t take long. One week after the Portland Pirates made the announcement that it will jump ship to Massachusetts, former Portland Pirates player and general manager Brad Church, and former Pirates owner Godfrey Wood, announced plans to bring another minor league hockey team to the Cross Insurance Arena.
According to The Forecaster, the new ECHL ”AA” team would be called the Pirates and use both the Pirates’ original logo and mascot.
While the recently departed American Hockey League Pirates were affiliated with an NHL parent team, Wood and Church told The Forecaster that the ECHL Pirates won’t be as firmly affiliated with a parent team, allowing the Portland team to have more control over its roster of players.
“We will be bringing back the fast, exciting physical style of hockey to keep fans engaged,” Church told The Forecaster. “We want to bring back the days of when families and children were filling the arena.”
Wood told The Forecaster that he hopes the new ECHL team will be playing games at the Portland arena starting in fall 2017.
“Brad Church and I are partnering on bringing a team back. We are working on a business plan to form a small group of investors to make this happen,” Wood told The Forecaster.
