Aroostook call center expects to cut 120 jobs

A Sitel call center location in Caribou said it anticipates as many as 120 employees could be laid off in July following the loss of a contract with Comcast.

“We are working tirelessly to bring in new business to the site to reduce or eliminate the potential reduction in workforce,” the company wrote in a notice to the state’s Department of Labor, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Layoffs at the Memphis, Tenn.-based telemarketing and outsourcing company’s Caribou call center location would happen from July 17 to July 31, according to the BDN. The contract with Philadelphia-based Comcast is set to expire July 21.

Although the loss of 120 jobs is more than half of the center’s 200-person workforce, the company will continue operations in Caribou where Sitel has other customers.

In its notice to employees about the layoffs, Sitel estimated that the bulk will come from customer service posts, which could see the elimination of 84 positions, the BDN reported.
