Maine Gov. Paul LePage voiced his opposition to Sweden’s proposed ban on the import of lobsters from the United States to the European Commission’s director general of the environment.

In his letter to Daniel Calleja Crespo, obtained by the Portland Press Herald, LePage writes: “The United States has submitted a scientific response to the risk assessment, compiled by state and federal lobster biologists here in Maine and around the region. The response indicates that the risk of establishment is minimal, and a prohibition on import is not the appropriate measure of response at this time.”

LePage joins U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King and U.S. Reps. Chellie Pingree and Bruce Poliquin, in his call opposing the possible ban.
