Farmers market in Freeport closed for good

The Freeport Farmers Market, which has been held on Friday afternoons in a section of L.L.Bean’s parking lot, will not be reopening following a drop in vendors stemming from a dip in sales.

The drop in sales comes in part from the difficulty in finding parking during Freeport’s busy summer tourist season and the comparative popularity of larger Saturday farmers markets in nearby communities, reports Sun Media.

“L.L.Bean was wonderful, but everybody knows that L.L.Bean’s parking lot, in the middle of the summer, you just can’t find parking,” Deede Montgomery, co-owner of Bessie’s Farm and a stall owner until last year, told Sun Media. “And the tourists aren’t out to buy perishable stuff.”
