South Portland officials split on water, carbon emissions monitoring

Members of South Portland’s planning board are split in a decision that would require building owners in Mill Creek to publicly divulge the energy and water use of some buildings in an attempt to monitor and decrease carbon emissions and excess energy use in the city.

The divide over the proposal, which was submitted by the Planning and Development Department and Sustainability Coordinator Julie Rosenbach, is that some board members believe that forcing building owners to make energy use public is an invasion of privacy, The Forecaster reports.

Planning Director Tex Haeuser, say that although releasing the information is a “little bit” invasive, it’s necessary if South Portland is serious about reducing carbon emissions.

“We’re not trying to hold a big hammer over people,” Haeuser said, according to The Forecaster, adding that the city will assist building owners in meeting energy efficiency goals.
