Appalachian Trail Conservancy visitor center opens in Maine
The Piscataquis County town of Monson is the latest community in the nation to have an Appalachian Trail Conservancy visitor center, joining Pennsylvania and Harpers Ferry, W.Va.
Staff at the visitor center, which the Bangor Daily News reports opened on Monday, will help hikers better understand the newly expanded permitting system in Baxter State Park and assist ATC staff in managing the increased popularity of the trails with long-distance hikers.
“It’s a one-stop shop for the thru-hikers to plan the last one or two weeks of their thru-hike, and the end of their thru-hike and getting off the trail,” Claire Polfus, Appalachian Trail Conservancy Maine conservation resources manager, told the BDN. “So hikers can come in and learn about the unique management and special place of Baxter State Park.”
The Monson center will be open seven days a week during the busy tourist season, which runs from June 20 through Oct. 16.
