A golden anniversary celebrated at South Portland pub

How do you celebrate the 50th anniversary of a South Portland watering hole institution? With an all-day party, and that’s just what the owner of The Griffin Club will be doing on June 25.

The Bangor Daily News spoke with Scott Parker, the current owner of the popular pub at 60 Ocean St., who was gearing up for a celebration of founder Eddie Griffin’s legacy. The Griffin Club’s founder opened his first South Portland bar, The Dug Out, 50 years ago, followed by the opening of The Griffin Club three years later.

In addition to founding the South Portland establishments, Parker told the BDN that Griffin was as well known for his charitable giving as he was for his role as a sports promoter, and his love of sports brought some of the biggest names in New England sports over the last half-century to the pub.

“Everyone but Larry Bird came in here,” Parker told the BDN.
