Farm-to-table strawberry ice cream is king for a few days

While Maine’s wild blueberries get a lot of press, the state’s strawberry crop is just as sure a sign of summer.

Red’s Dairy Freeze in South Portland is well aware of the allure of that little red berry, as evidenced by a partnership between the ice cream shop and Maxwell’s Farm in Cape Elizabeth.

Since the late 1980s, the two businesses have joined forces to make a limited run of soft-serve ice cream made with the freshly picked berries.

How limited of a run? Nancy Frizzle, the manager of Red’s, told The Forecaster that this year the store began selling the treat on Wednesday, June 22, before the last scoop was made on Monday.

“It’s once a year,” Frizzle told The Forecaster. “You want something limited edition, right?”

People do in fact want something limited — Frizzle estimated that during its limited run this year, seven out of every 10 customers ordered it.

“It’s the thing,” Frizzle told The Forecaster. “It’s what everyone wants.”
