UMaine Presque Isle provost to serve as interim president

The provost of the University of Maine at Presque Isle, Raymond Rice, will serve as the interim president of the Aroostook County public university.

Rice will be taking the reins of the university from Linda Schott, who announced in mid-June that she would be leaving her post to serve as president of Southern Oregon University. Schott plans to leave before the start of the 2016-2017 academic year.

Rice, who is also an English professor, has worked for UMaine Presque Isle for 19 years. During his nearly two decades he has held various positions, including chairman of the College of Arts and Sciences. Since 2014 he’s been provost and vice president for academic and student affairs.

“Boldly and collectively the University of Maine at Presque Isle set a strategic objective to become a higher education leader in proficiency-based education,” Rice said a prepared statement about his appointment. “Our shared commitment to success and service has earned national recognition for our university and a mandate of continued progress from our university leaders and stakeholders.”
