Controversial Passadumkeag wind project sold for $127M

The Passadumkeag Wind project in Grand Falls Township has been purchased by the Atlanta-based energy company Southern Co. for $127 million.

The Bangor Daily News reports that the 13-turbine wind project, which is Southern’s first New England-based project, was sold by the Houston-based developer Quantum Utility Generation.

According to a release from Southern, once construction of the project is completed, which is expected to happen shortly after the acquisition is finalized, the Passadumkeag project will be able to produce enough electricity to power 14,000 homes.

"This exciting project adds to a dynamic renewable energy portfolio that is delivering clean, safe, reliable and affordable generation to wholesale customers across the country,” Southern Power President and CEO Buzz Miller said in the release.

Development and construction of the project has been contentious, according to the BDN. In 2012, the project was denied a permit by the Maine Department of Environment Protection because of its impact on the scenic views in the area. The denial, which was the first of its kind for a wind project in the state, was overturned in 2014 by the Board of Environmental Protection.
