Maine's first organic distillery calls Newcastle home
Organic isn’t limited to fresh produce these days. From candy to ice cream, the desire to eat organic has moved beyond a punchline to a Whole Foods joke to a real lifestyle and profitable industry. Spirits are no different — and according to the owners of Split Rock Distilling, they are the only 100% organic distillery in the state.
The Newcastle-based distillery, which held a soft opening over the holiday weekend, has been nearly two years in the making, a span of time that founders Topher Mallory and Matt Page used to renovate a barn on the property for production.
"We had yet to even start the process of rehabbing the building and truly understanding how much was going to go into it," Page told the Lincoln County News. "We were aware of things like dealing with manufacturers and purchasing the equipment of this scale, but we didn't fully have a grasp on it at the time."
It also wasn’t always known if the company would be able to produce a roster of 100% organic spirits, which currently includes a bourbon, blueberry vodka and a horseradish vodka. Page and Mallory told the Lincoln County News that there were few organic distilleries in 2014, when the project began, but now all of the products are certified organic by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association.
