Brotherly brains of custom-auto shop expand into the world of BBQ
Twisted Iron Customs, a Wiscasset-based custom motorcycle and automobile maker, has expanded the brand into the world of barbecue and other casual culinary offerings with the opening of Twisted Iron Grille, a new barbecue stand on Route 1.
The Lincoln County News spoke to brothers Michael and Travis Benner about their move into the business of pulled pork, cheeseburgers and beef brisket, which isn’t as unlikely as it sounds.
Before Travis worked behind the counter at Twisted Iron Customs, ordering parts and chipping-in with work at the shop owned by Michael, he worked for a stint at the Georgetown-based Robinhood Free Meetinghouse, was a sous chef at the Damariscotta River Grill and the executive chef of the residential program at Lincoln Academy.
"I just wanted to do something for myself," Benner told the Lincoln County news.
So his brother purchased a trailer that was once home to Sea Digger's Grub, a seafood takeout spot, and set up the trailer next to the custom shop. That’s not unlike the countless food trucks that have called larger urban areas, like Portland, home.
"I've always wanted a [food truck]," Travis Benner told the Lincoln County News. "It seemed like it'd be something that's fun to do, and I think Wiscasset needs something like this."
