National, local gas prices continue to tumble

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Maine dropped by four cents to $2.28, continuing an extended streak of falling prices in the state.

During that same period, the average national price for a gallon of gas dropped by three cents to $2.23, according to the popular price-tracking website GasBuddy.

The $2.28 statewide average reported on Tuesday morning is higher than New Hampshire’s average price of $2.19 per gallon, but one cent lower than the $2.29 price per gallon of Vermont.

“As we head into the dog days of summer, expect overall gas price [changes] to be mild. There will likely be bi-weekly price hikes in the Great Lakes, followed by big drops, and much of the rest of the country may see prices remain ‘somewhat’ stable, though unexpected disruptions may become an issue,” Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com, said in a release. “The national average will likely stay between $2.10 and $2.35 per gallon for much of the remainder of the summer.”
