UMaine trustees propose new tuition pricing model

University of Maine system officials are proposing to establish a three-tiered tuition pricing model for the schools.

According to The Portland Press Herald, as it stands now the seven UMaine schools have individual prices that can range from the $8,370 high that is charged at the system’s flagship Orono campus, to a low of $6,600 a year at UMaine’s Fort Kent and Presque Isle campuses.

The newly proposed pricing structure would establish three tiers; with the Orono campus continuing to have the highest tuition, while the University of Maine at Farmington and the University of Southern Maine would pay a lower tuition and the four remaining UMaine-system schools would have the lowest tuition price.

A trustee vote for the proposal is slated for September, with UMaine officials telling the Press Herald that changes wouldn’t take effect until the 2017-18 academic year.
