Feds award $10.5M for replacement of Beals Island Bridge

The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $10.5 million for the replacement of the Beals Island Bridge, the only crossing that connects the island and town of Beals with the mainland at Jonesport.

The award, which was announced on Tuesday through the office of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, is just the latest in a series of grants awarded for infrastructure improvements in the state through the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant program.

"This important funding will allow the Maine Department of Transportation to move forward in replacing the bridge, improving public safety, increasing connectivity between the island and the mainland, and helping to create jobs in rural Maine,” Collins said in a statement.

Collins has secured more than $112 million through the TIGER program for projects throughout Maine, including the replacements of bridges in Kittery, Dresden-Richmond and Rumford, and the breakwater in Eastport.
