Former police barracks in Orono will get a new life as car lot

The Bangor-based car dealership Van Syckle Inc. has been granted the go-ahead for its plans to convert the former Maine State Police barracks on Main Street in Orono into a 10-vehicle used car lot.

The Bangor Daily News reports that Van Syckle received approval for the plan by the town’s planning board on Wednesday under the condition that a buffer made from either side fencing or trees be installed at the 240 Main St. lot.

According to the BDN, the idea of a used car lot at such a high-traffic area in Orono caused some dissent among residents, including Maggie Tipping, who started a campaign asking neighbors to attend the meeting in addition to submitting comments from those unable to attend.

Code Enforcement Officer Bill Murphy told attendees that a car dealership is permitted in the parcel, which is in a commercial district, adding that the planning board must follow town ordinance and can’t reject a proposal simply because it’s unpopular, according to the BDN.
