Cioppa rejects insurer’s bid to raise car insurance rates for seniors

Maine Superintendent of Insurance Eric Cioppa has rejected Progressive Corp.’s request to raise car insurance rates for older Maine drivers based solely on their age.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the Ohio-based company’s proposed rate change for older drivers would have affected up to 65,000 policyholders in Maine.

Cioppa ruled the change would have violated a section of Maine’s insurance code that protects drivers from arbitrary rate increases based on their age, the newspaper reported. Progressive indicated it will not appeal Cioppa’s decision, which was applauded by AARP.
