Airplane hangars can be energy-efficient too — for $1.5M

The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority will receive $1,558,098 from the Federal Aviation Administration to install new energy-efficient heating systems in a pair of hangars at the Brunswick Executive Airport.

The funding, which was awarded through the FAA’s Military Airport Program, will be used to install new radiant heating systems in Hangars 4 and 5 at the Brunswick-based airport, heating the buildings for a fraction of the cost.

“The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority has made significant progress redeveloping the former Brunswick Naval Air Station to generate new economic activity and create high-quality jobs,” U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King said in a joint statement. “Brunswick Executive Airport is a tremendous asset for the businesses located in Brunswick Landing as well as the surrounding communities. This investment will help increase the airport’s energy efficiency, benefiting the diverse users of the facility.”
