UMaine welcomes largest incoming class

The University of New England isn’t the only Maine school celebrating a record number of incoming students — the University of Maine also welcomed its largest incoming class this week.

2,300 students began their post-high school life on Monday at the flagship campus of the University of Maine system in Orono. According to a release from the university, 44% of the class of 2020 came from outside of the state.

“Enrollment growth continues to be a key priority for the university and this past year saw important progress, with increased interest in UMaine among out-of-state students,” Jeffrey Hecker, executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at UMaine said in a statement. “As Maine’s public research university serving the state, our ongoing commitment is to academic quality and an engaged student experience.”

At the graduate level, new students who have confirmed acceptance into master’s and doctoral programs are also up 20% and 4% respectively over the same time last year, according to the university.
