Robert J. Dunfey Sr., founder of the Maine Mall, has died

Robert J. Dunfey Sr., the founder and developer of the Maine Mall in South Portland, died last week after a long fight with Parkinson’s disease.

Dunfey, 88, died on Sunday, Aug. 23, in Dover, N.H. He lived in Portsmouth, N.H., reports the Portland Press Herald.

In addition to spearheading the development of the Maine Mall, Dunfey also assisted in the development of several nearby developments, including the DoubleTree Hotel and the Clarks Pond retail complex in South Portland.

Dunfey also acquired the downtown Portland Eastland Hotel in 1960 and co-founded the Dunfey Hotel chain, known now as Omni Hotels.
