Waterville Creates! — a collaborate nonprofit that works hand-in-hand with area artists, cultural institutions and supporters of the arts to make the Kennebec County city an arts and culture destination — has named Shannon Haines its president and CEO.

Haines, whose appointment as head of the organization begins on Oct. 1, currently serves as the executive director of the Waterville-based Maine Film Center, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to enrich, educate and entertain the community at large through film and art.

The newly appointed head of Waterville Creates!, who was a member of Mainebiz’s 2008 Next List, also served as the executive director of Waterville Main Street for a decade and the Maine Film Center for four years, while also operating as festival director for the Maine International Film Festival for 14 years.

“I am thrilled to have this opportunity to draw upon my past experience in the arts and community development to advance the mission of Waterville Creates! and to support the incredible arts institutions and creative businesses in our community,” Haines said in a statement. “These are very exciting times for Waterville, and I feel privileged to be able to play an active role in shaping the future of our city.”
