As national gas prices drop, Maine sees slight rise

Gas prices in Maine continue their post-driving season climb, as the average price for a gallon of gas in the state rose by a single cent to $2.23.

During that same period, the average national price for a gallon of gas dropped by three cents to $2.19, according to the price-tracking website GasBuddy.

The $2.23 statewide average in Maine reported on Tuesday morning is higher than New Hampshire's average of $2.13 per gallon, but a penny lower than the $2.24 price per gallon in Vermont.

“Lower than expected demand and decent output by refineries through the spring and summer means prices are likely to fall for the near future. Add to this the pending change in gasoline specs from summer to winter blends and the scenario for even cheaper gas looks promising,” Dan McTeague, Gasbuddy senior petroleum analyst, said in a release. “Not that this will prevent daily musings over crude especially as a meeting of OPEC members at the end of the month is always guaranteed to stimulate a lot of speculation over a much sought after cap in oil production that is enforceable.”
