$2.34M in funding earmarked for Maine health care programs, workforce training

Nineteen Maine health care providers and educational institutions have been awarded $2,343,393 in grant funding from the Health Resources and Service Administration to help boost workforce training and health care programs.

“Community health centers and other innovative care models help address the unique challenges of ensuring access to care across a large and predominantly rural state like Maine,” U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King said in a joint statement. “These grants will allow programs with proven success to expand their community-based health care practices and workforce training, helping to improve the health of Mainers across the state.”

The funding comes through health workforce grant programs, quality improvement awards and other programs at the Health Resources and Services Administration. The breakdown of grants and grant recipients from the Maine is as follows:

Workforce grant

  • The University of New England in Biddeford will receive a total of $892,758, of which $22,464 will go to its Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship program, $370,297 to Nurse Education Practice Quality and Retention program and $499,997 to its Primary Care Training and Enhancement program.

Primary health care and health center grant recipients

  • Regional Medical Center at Lubec will receive $108,335.
  • Fish River Rural Health will receive $102,864 to serve the Eagle Lake region.
  • Maine Migrant Health Program, Inc. will receive $12,706.
  • Sacopee Valley Health Center will receive $101,045.
  • Katahdin Valley Health Center will receive $151,878.
  • Saint Croix Regional Family Health Center will receive $65,782
  • Bucksport Regional Health Center will receive $68,795.
  • Eastport Health Care Inc. will receive $79,183.
  • D.F.D. Russell Medical Center Inc. will receive $78,252 to serve the Town of Leeds and the surrounding area.
  • Healthreach Community Health Centers will receive $108,759 to serve the Waterville region.
  • Harrington Family Health Center will receive $50,659.
  • Sebasticook Family Doctors will receive $60,000.
  • Health Access Network, Inc. will receive $60,885 to serve the Lincoln region.
  • York County Community Action Corporation will receive $45,674.
  • Penobscot Community Health Center will receive $114,996.
  • Islands Community Medical Services, Inc. will receive $37,490 to serve Vinalhaven and the surrounding islands.
  • Pines Health Services will receive $152,130 to serve the Caribou region.
  • Portland Community Health Center will receive $51,202.
