Holiday weekend travel on Maine Turnpike up 4.5%

Miles the Moose and Clawdette the Lobster, the venerable mascots of the Maine Turnpike, were kept busy over the Labor Day weekend as they handed out Farmers’ Almanacs to the thousands of travelers leaving Vacationland over the four-day weekend.

Both Miles and Clawdette handed out approximately 7,000 almanacs for free at the York toll plaza.

Turnpike spokesperson Rebecca Grover told the Maine Public Broadcasting Network that early numbers show that traffic increased by nearly 4.5% from last year, adding that approximately 1.2 million toll plaza transactions occurred between Friday, Sept. 2, and Monday, Sept. 5.
