Westbrook's Pika Energy lands $875K clean energy grant

The Westbrook-based clean energy equipment manufacturer Pika Energy will receive a grant for $875,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy to improve its technology that allows electric grids to use clean energy sources, like solar power.

"We've got some people doing excellent work on wind, tidal and solar in Maine in both the private sector and at the university level," U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree said in a statement. "It sometimes takes public investment like this grant to get a new industry going, but it will pay off in the long term by creating the kind of good jobs right here in Maine that can't be exported."

Pika will use the federal funding to continue development on technology it’s created that assists in managing distributed energy systems, including solar arrays, and integrate them into the electric grid. The technology also allows for smart control of electric loads, allowing electric consumers to take advantage of the power available during peak supply periods when prices are lower.

The grant is part of the DOE’s SunShot initiative, which is aimed at improving the efficiency of solar energy installations, according to Pingree’s office.
