'Market demands' lead to 31 layoffs at Mercy
As part of a large consolidation effort, the Portland-based Mercy Hospital announced the layoffs of 31 employees on Tuesday.
According to WMTW TV-8, the cuts included employees working in the service, clinical and administrative departments of the hospital. Mercy spokesman Wayne Clark told WMTW the cuts were "necessary to fit market demands."
"While it is difficult to see colleagues leave, it is necessary if we are to realize our vision of a strong Mercy Hospital,” Clark told WMTW.
In July, the hospital announced that it had offered early retirement buyouts to 99 eligible employees as part of consolidation efforts.
