Can't find an Airbnb near Portland? Try 'glamping' in a yurt

"Glamping," or glamorous camping, has caught on in recent years, according to Business Insider, and Maine Forest Yurts of Durham is capitalizing on the trend for tourists wanting a close encounter with nature, without all the dirt or the bugs.

Started by Bob Crowley using the $1 million he won as the winner of the TV show “Survivor - Gabon” in 2008, the former physics teacher charges $125 a night to stay in a yurt, which is a circular, portable tent originally used by Central Asia nomads. The yurts sell out for the summer, when they are open.

Business Insider says Crowley and his wife acquired about 100 acres of remote Maine woods while they lived for more than 30 years in South Portland.

Crowley, 65, was the oldest winner of the show when he won eight years ago. He told Business Insider he’d jump at the chance of returning to the show for a reunion, but that likely would involve really roughing it compared to the glamping he’s now selling as an outdoor experience.

He’s also enjoying celebrity in his home state, telling yurt guests about his experience on Survivor and becoming a Facebook spokesman for Good Natured Marketing of North Yarmouth, an all-natural cleaning and personal care products company that Mainebiz wrote about in June. He's holding a bottle of Good Natured’s Bugaroo Bug Spray with the caption, "How do I survive the outdoors?"
