Maine tech developments receive $55K from MTI
The Maine Technology Institute approved seven grant applications for the month of August totaling $55,785 to Maine businesses specializing in advancements in the fields of aquaculture and marine technology, forestry, agriculture, information technology and precision manufacturing.
The award recipients matched that amount with a total of $105,093.
Tech Start Grants
Four organizations were awarded Tech Start Grants from MTI totaling $16,655: Northport-based Maine Shoe Project, awarded $3,490 from MTI with an equal match; Sensory Cyber Systems of Orono, awarded $5,000 with a $10,795 match; Old Orchard Beach-based Sensory Eyesight for Education, awarded $3,165 with a $3,665 match; and Hartland-based Tasman Leather Group , awarded $5,000 with a $9,262 match.
Tech Start Grants are awarded monthly to entrepreneurs and companies across the state looking to develop innovative products and services. They can be used for specific developmental activities such as market analysis and intellectual property filings.
Business Accelerator Grant
One company was awarded a Business Accelerator Grant from MTI totaling $9,140 in August. Franklin-based Sea & Reef Aquaculture was awarded $9,140 from MTI with a $35,740 match.
Business Accelerator Grants are available to start-up companies that had previously been awarded Development Loans from MTI, in addition to companies that have been awarded federal Small Business Innovation Research grants, Small Business Technology Transfer grants, or any other similar federal research and developmental funding awards.
A Business Accelerator Grant is provided to increase the competitiveness of the grant recipients by providing funds directed at product and service commercialization.
Seed Grant
One company was awarded a Seed Grant from MTI totaling $25,000 in August. Van Buren-based Raptor Maps Inc. was awarded $25,000 from MTI with a $37,141 match.
Seed Grants are offered three times a year to support the conversion of innovative research into new products, processes and companies. Funded activities may include proof of concept work, prototype development, field trials, prototype testing, pilot studies or technology transfer activities.
Phase 0 KickStarter
One company was awarded a Phase 0 KickStarter from MTI totaling $4,990 in August. Winthrop-based Alba-Technic was awarded $4,990 from MTI with a $5,000 match.
A Phase 0 KickStarter Grant is offered to support competitive federal proposal submissions from Maine applicants. The funds are to be used for costs associated with preparing a proposal, such as paying for grant writers and consultations from experts in a given field.
