Maine gas prices fall to late summer numbers

Gas prices in Maine are the lowest they’ve been since the end of August, as the average price for a gallon of gas dropped by two cents to $2.21.

During the one-week until Tuesday, the average national price for a gallon of gas dropped by a single cent to $2.20, according to the price-tracking website GasBuddy.

The $2.21 statewide average in Maine reported on Tuesday morning is higher than both New Hampshire's average of $2.12 and Vermont’s price of $2.20.

Gregg Laskoski, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, said the highest jump in gas prices stemming from the Colonial Pipeline breakage, appears to have passed.

"While it appears that the worst may be behind us, we're not out of the woods yet where gasoline inventory levels are concerned," said Laskoski. "Following Hurricane Katrina, gasoline inventory levels two weeks later had shed 3.3 million barrels. The reduction in East Coast gasoline inventory tied to the Colonial Pipeline damage is estimated at 8.5 million barrels. The scale of this recovery is unparalleled so we should expect it may be extended for several weeks."
