Organic waste reuse company's Unity expansion touts job creation

Thirty new jobs and $4 million in economic investment will be coming to Unity following the announcement by Canadian-based Envirem Organics that it plans to open its first U.S. facility in the Waldo County town.

Envirem’s Unity facility, which will house offices, warehousing and distribution functions, will be located on 41 acres at 39 Cornershop Road.

According to its website, Envirem manufactures, markets and exports organic products including composts, organic soils, bark mulches, potting mixes and organic fertilizers using forestry and industrial residuals.

The company said it chose the region for its access to the New England organic lawn and garden markets, available shipping lanes, the proximity to the environmental science programs at Unity College and its proximity to New Brunswick, Canada, where the company is headquartered.

“Unity and the Kennebec Valley region of Maine checked all the boxes for our first expansion into America,” Bob Kiely, Envirem president and general manager, said in a statement. “It provides the marketplace advantages we desire in terms of workforce, location, and infrastructure and the quality of life we want for our employees.”
