It's Friday so let's talk beer: Allagash takes home the gold at brew festival

Allagash Brewing Co.’s Tripel Ale bested a field of 92 other Belgian-Style Tripels to take home the gold at the 2016 Great American Beer Festival in Colorado last weekend.

“We couldn’t be more proud,” Allagash founder Rob Tod said in a statement. “It’s a beer we’ve been brewing almost from the beginning of Allagash, so it’s awesome to see that our recipe has really withstood the test of time.”

This is the second time Allagash’s Tripel Ale has taken home the gold medal in the category at the annual Great American Beer Festival — the first came a decade ago in 2006. The Belgian beer also won a silver award at the festival in 2009 and 2015, according to the Portland-based brewery.

So what makes an award winning Belgian-Style Tripel? According to Allagash, its Tripel is “a strong golden ale with herbal notes and passion fruit in the aroma, which are complemented by suggestions of honey and biscuit in the beer's complex, varied palate.”

“We do so much experimenting with new beers,” Allagash Brewmaster Jason Perkins said in a release. “It’s always an important reminder to see that one of the longest-running and simplest beers we brew, recipe-wise, is also one of the most awarded.”
