Nat May, the executive director of SPACE Gallery, the alternative arts venue that has become a cornerstone of Portland’s creative arts community, will be stepping down from his post effective Nov. 18.
May served as the head of SPACE for 13 years, where he led the downtown venue through a significant period of growth that included expanding its staff, doubling the facility’s footprint through an annex expansion in 2011, launching an on-site artist residency and spearheading the purchase of 538 Congress St., which includes three floors of artist studios called SPACE Studios and the printmaking facility, Pickwick Independent Press.
“I’m proud of my work with SPACE and happy to have developed so many relationships through this work. SPACE has been my home for so many years and I’m happy to be leaving it in good hands,” May said in a news release announcing his departure.
The SPACE board of directors will appoint an interim director and is in the process of creating a search committee to identify a new executive director.
