Feds investigate suspected welfare fraud at Portland market

The owner of Ahram Halal Market on Forest Avenue in Portland is being investigated by federal authorities in connection with suspected welfare fraud, the Portland Press Herald reported.

The Press Herald reported that investigators from the FBI, IRS and the Department of Agriculture compared the volume of SNAP transactions at the store, owned by Ali Daham, to other stores in the city and found that the Ahram Halal Market’s sole register was processing a volume close comparable to the 18-register strong Forest Avenue Hannaford supermarket.

The Press Herald added that a cooperating witness made undercover purchases at the Ahram Halal Market and requested cash back, to which Daham would overcharge the unnamed witness’ EBT card and provide the cash through the store’s register, or the store owner’s own pocket.

No charges have been filed against Daham, according to the Press Herald.
