Residents concerned about Alton landfill expansion

Engineers from Casella Waste Systems are speaking before the Maine Board of Environmental Protection at a two-day public hearing to provide studies to support an expansion that would nearly double the 10-million-cubic-yard capacity of the state-owned Juniper Ridge Landfill in Alton.

Maine Public reported that the state-owned landfill, which has been operated for 13 years by Casella Waste Systems, is running out of space and that the expansion would allow the landfill operational capacity to continue for roughly another decade or more.

“We are by far the largest recycler in the state of Maine,” Toni King, a regional engineer for Casella, told Maine Public.

But not everyone in the community is behind the expansion, with many voicing their concerns about the possibility of landfill leakage contaminating groundwater, while others have voiced concerns about the possibility of waste from outside Maine being buried at the landfill — which the company denies, according to Maine Public.
