Health Access Network employee fired over data breach

An employee has been fired from Health Access Network after she improperly accessed clinical data for less than 500 of the federally funded community health center’s 17,000 patients.

The CEO of the Lincoln-based Health Access Network, Bill Diggins, told the Bangor Daily News that a new employee who had access to patients’ billing data, including payment arrangements and Social Security numbers as part of her job, was fired after a computer tracking program showed that the unnamed employee accessed clinical data, including patient visit notes, diagnoses and plans of care.

Diggins added that the patients whose information was accessed have been informed of the data breach and that no copies were made of the data, but said it’s unknown what the employee may have written down.
