Expansive shopping plaza gets OK in Westbrook

A 500,000-square-foot shopping center is coming to Westbrook after city officials unanimously approved the redevelopment of an 80-acre parcel at the intersection of Main Street and Larrabee Road.

WGME13 TV reported that J&J Gove Development can now begin converting the parcel, a long-time gravel pit, into a shopping plaza that is expected to add an average of 13,000 more trips to the area each day.

So far, Wal-mart and Chick-Fil-A are confirmed tenants, but the Portland Press Herald reported that 25 total tenants will occupy the plaza, which could open by the fall of 2017.

By comparison, the Maine Mall is 1.2 million square feet, Bangor Mall is 653,000 square feet and Kittery Premium Outlets is 265,000 square feet.
