Possible layoffs delayed at Maine Military Authority

Employees at the Maine Military Authority in Limestone breathed a collective sigh of relief on Thursday when they received word from company officials that the planned layoff of two-thirds of the workforce today would be delayed for now.

“Just a few moments ago, I received an email that stated that there’s been an extension to that layoff and that everybody is to report to work on Monday — so that’s good news,” Maine State Employees Association Executive Director Rod Hiltz told Maine Public.

Hiltz added that he doesn’t know for sure what the extension means for the work being done at the Maine Military Authority, but told Maine Public that state officials have met with Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority officials to decide by Wednesday how they will move forward.

In late September, Gov. Paul LePage halted a contract executed by the Maine Military Authority following the discovery that the $19 million agreement to refurbish buses for the Boston-area transit system was underbid, leading to added taxpayer costs and jeopardizing Aroostook County jobs.

“Right now they’re intending to reschedule the [Maine Department of Labor’s] rapid response meeting for either next Thursday or next Friday because they have to prepare for the layoffs — if they happen,” Hiltz told Maine Public.
