Maine, nation slow in rollout of EMV-capable ATMS
Maine ATM operators in the Mastercard network are slow to embrace EMV chip-enabled cards, putting customers at a high risk for fraudulent activity.
According to a new report by the Portland Press Herald, of the 815 Mastercard ATMS in Maine, only 96 — or 11.8% — of the machines are equipped with chip-reading capabilities. In the Lewiston-Auburn area, only 67 of the 481 ATMs are equipped with chip-readers, or 13.9%.
But Edgar Dworsky, founder of Massachusetts-based consumer watchdog service Consumer World, told the Press Herald that the 12% rate reported in Portland is in line with other cities around the United States.
“[T]hat is an unacceptably low number,” Dworsky, told the Press Herald. “Bank customers deserve to have this highest level of security at every ATM they use.”
