Emissions cap-and-trade program brings $3M to Maine manufacturers
Sixteen of Maine’s largest manufacturers, including paper makers, will get $3 million from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which aims to curb pollution by capping and trading electric plant carbon emissions.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Verso, Sappi and Catalyst will split approximately $1.5 million of the funds, while the Waterville-based packaging manufacturer Huhtamaki will be on the receiving end of $364,457.
Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor also made the cut for its breeding of mice for testing, which will bring the biomedical lab $54,000, according to the Bangor Daily News.
Through the nine-state Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, more efficient electric plants are able to sell pollution credits to less efficient plants, capping overall emissions while penalizing higher polluters, according to Maine Public.
