Scarborough bids adieu to Tim Hortons, hello to Holy Donut

The Holy Donut is expanding its retail location footprint outside of Portland for the first time since its founding in 2012, as a former Tim Hortons on Route 1 in Scarborough will be home to the doughnut maker's third and largest location.
The Bangor Daily News spoke to owner Leigh Kellis, a member of the 2015 Mainebiz Next class, who was fresh off of signing a lease on Monday for the 3,000-square-foot space at 398 US Route 1, which will serve as both a retail storefront and The Holy Donut’s main location for dough and glaze production when it opens in March.
Kellis told the BDN that the move will allow the company to increase production from 30,000 of its hand cut potato donuts a week to between 45,000 and 50,000. In addition to building renovations, Kellis told the BDN that she’ll also be hiring 10 to 15 employees for the new location.
The Holy Donut currently has two retail stores in Portland, at 7 Exchange St. and 194 Park Ave., through a partnership, Handy's Market in Yarmouth also sells Holy Donuts at its cafe.
“I think it’s symbolic that where a corporate business did not work out, a small, family run business is opening,” Kellis told the BDN. “I’m pretty psyched about it.”
