Will low populations keep Maine’s shrimp fishery closed?

Maine’s cold water shrimp fishery has been closed since the end of 2013 due to dwindling numbers of the crustacean, and a group of scientists says that it should stay that way for at least the next 12 months.

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission told the Associated Press that its shrimp scientific committee says shrimp species are still facing “poor prospects for the near future,” adding that it recommends that the fishery should remain closed through 2017.

According to the AP, scientists say the warming ocean temperatures in waters off New England are inhospitable to shrimp.

A decision on the possible continued closure of Maine’s shrimp fishery is scheduled for Nov. 10.
