Surge Hydro heading to national Cleantech clean energy competition

Surge Hydro, a Belfast-based hydroelectric development firm, has joined an elite class of environmentally minded Maine companies in becoming the third company in the state in five years to win the Cleantech Open Northeast Competition.

The two previous Maine regional winners were the Westbrook-based Pika Energy in 2012 and Rapport, a sustainability software company in Portland, which won in 2015.

Surge will be joined by three other regional startups, the Princeton, N.J.-based GreenBlue; Boston-based Proper Pipe and the Cambridge, Mass.-based PV Pure, at the national competition in February 2017.

The Cleantech Open is the world’s largest cleantech accelerator with a mission to find, fund and develop entrepreneurs with ideas that address today’s energy, environmental and economic challenges.

Since 2005, more than 1,000 startups have participated in its annual accelerator and mentorship program in the United States alone, raising a total of more than $1.2 billion. The program provides mentoring, training, business clinics, access to investors and capital, and numerous opportunities to showcase to the media and the public, according to a news release.

“Maine is increasingly becoming a clean-tech incubator for companies that are coming up with solutions for the world’s biggest environmental and energy problems,” E2Tech Executive Director Jeff Marks said in a news release. “The 2016 U.S. Clean Tech Leadership Index — a data-based comparison of all 50 states among 70 technology, capital, and policy indicators — found that Maine improved its ranking from 22nd to 18th since 2015 and has moved ahead 11 places since 2014.”
