What does private trust plan to do with 290,000 acres of Maine forest?

Tall Timbers Trust, the private family trust that recently acquired 290,000 acres of forest land in Aroostook, Penobscot and Piscataquis counties, says that the purchase of the tracts of land is an investment in the long-term future in Maine’s forest products industry.

Gary Bahlkow, a forestry consultant that is managing the recently purchased acreage for Tall Timbers Trust, told the Bangor Daily News that although the forest products industry is going through a rough patch growing markets, like that for cross-laminated timber panels, make the purchase of the acreage a long-term investment.

Maine’s diverse forest ecology is also a big selling point for investors. Bahlkow told the BDN that unlike many other forests that are dominated by a single species of trees, which allows the easier spread of infestations and disease, the state’s diverse timberlands put investments on more stable footing.

Bahlkow added that the land will primarily stay as a working forest, but that the Tall Timbers Trust has divided parcels in transactions with the Nature Conservancy, the BDN reported.
