Allagash's Hibernal Fluxus has the winter months, philanthropy in mind

Allagash Brewing is offering a helping hand for Mainers looking for ways to get through the state’s harsh winter with Hibernal Fluxus, a new brew that the company’s brewmaster said will be a great pairing with the cold temperatures.

“Bigger, darker beers pair much better with colder temperatures,” Allagash Brewmaster Jason Perkins said a statement. “So we’re excited to put out some recipes that will really benefit from winter weather.”

Allagash said that the beer’s namesake, Fluxus, a Latin word meaning continuous change, is the perfect fit for the seasonal beer as it will be brewed with a different recipe each year. The first-ever Hibernal Fluxus is a Belgian-style stout brewed with figs. Chocolate in color with mocha foam, this ale’s aroma is a smoky mix of sugar plums, toffee and black treacle.

Its creator, Jason Winchester, senior bottling line operator at Allagash, started the beer as a home brew in 2008. Winchester then brought the beer up through the pilot system, a small brewing system through which any Allagash employee can suggest and brew a beer idea, according to the company.

Hibernal Fluxus also serves a philanthropic purpose: a portion of the proceeds from sales will go directly to the nonprofit Window Dressers. Window Dressers’ mission is to help Maine residents reduce heating costs, fossil fuel consumption and carbon monoxide emissions by minimizing heat loss through their windows.

Hibernal Fluxus is available for purchase at the Allagash’s tasting room and began shipping to the company’s distribution area on Nov. 14.
