Portland Buy Local hires first executive director

Portland Buy Local Jenn Thompson has been hired as the first executive director of Portland Buy Local.

Portland Buy Local, which was started a decade ago to represent independent businesses, has named its first executive director.

Jenn Thompson, who joined the organization in April 2015 and previously served as program manager for the Portland Maine Farmers’ Market, will take over day-to-day operations.

As executive director, she plans to expand membership benefits, while offering greater collaboration with the city of Portland and other organizations.

“As Portland’s economy continues to grow, the connectedness of the local business community is more important now than ever,” Thompson said in a press release announcing the hiring. “Our local businesses are vital to the strength and character of Portland, and play an important role in the future of our city.”

Tony Cox, president of the Portland Buy Local board and owner of Casco Bay Frames & Gallery, described Thompson as “an incredible asset.”

“She’s been a dedicated employee over the years and has big plans that will continue to engage Portland’s ever-growing local business community,” Cox said.

Portland Buy Local, founded in July 2006, is a campaign of the Portland Independent Business and Community Alliance. It has nearly 500 members, including businesses, nonprofits and individuals. Its mission is to support locally owned, independent businesses in Portland “to maintain the community’s unique character, provide continuous opportunities for entrepreneurs, build community economic strength, and prevent the displacement of community-based businesses by national and global chains.”
