MECA gets $300,000 grant for craft, other programs

Four programs at the the Maine College of Art in Portland will benefit from a $300,000 grant from the Windgate Charitable Foundation.

The college said the money will go into four craft programs comprising ceramics, metalsmithing and jewelry, textile and fashion design and woodworking and furniture design. It also will fund three key areas at the college comprising tools and equipment, visiting artists and the endowed Belvedere Fund for alumni professional development.

“MECA is known for its strong craft programs, and this funding will be a great catalyst for us,” interim President Stuart Kestenbaum said in a statement.

He added that Windgate is known for its support of craft programs throughout the country.
