NBT Bancorp Inc. promoted the leader of its Maine expansion to head the bank.

John H. Watt Jr. was named president and CEO of NBT on Wednesday, the Norwich, N.Y.-based bank said Monday.

Watt joined NBT in 2014 to oversee the bank’s expansion into Maine and its creation of a regional headquarters in Portland. He was promoted to executive vice president and the executive management team in 2015.

Watt takes over from retiring President and CEO Martin A. Dietrich, who was elected chairman of the board on Dec. 16.

Maine’s regional president is now Kim Twitchell.

NBT Bancorp (NASDAQ: NBTB), with assets of $8.8 billion, has 154 branches in New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.
